WAA Airport Advisory Committee on Environment

The Airport Advisory Committee on Environment (AACOE) is a consultative forum to promote co-operation and effective communication between the community and the airport, to address environmental issues related to airport operations and development in a collaborative and open manner.  The Committee was originally established in 1989 as the Airport Advisory Committee on Aircraft Noise.  In 1999, WAA expanded the scope of the committee to include environmental noise.

The Committee's purpose is to:

  • evaluate airport operations, discuss technological or procedural measures, assess impacts on the adjacent community and develop recommendations related to environmental issues;
  • provide input and suggestions on the Airport Authority’s Environmental Management System as it relates to pollution prevention and continual improvement;
  • make appropriate recommendations to protect airport lands from encroachment of incompatible land uses with respect to environmental issues;
  • consider the continued maximum viability of the airport in relation to resident concerns and the service benefits provided by Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport to the City of Winnipeg and the Province of Manitoba 

Committee Composition

Committee members are appointed by local federal, provincial and municipal representatives from the neighbourhoods adjacent to the airport. Committee members also represent the Assiniboia Chamber of Commerce, as well as the Friends of Bruce Park and the Friends of Omands Creek - two local watershed organizations.  Technical advisors from Nav Canada, Transport Canada, Department of National Defence (17 Wing), Manitoba Infrastructure and Transportation and WAA also attend.  The committee is co-chaired by a community member and a representative from WAA.  The community co-chair also sits as a member of the Community Consultative Committee.
