The Winnipeg Airports Authority Fire Department is mandated to provide fire protection services in the event of an aircraft incident or accident at Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport. Although that remains the main focus, the fire department also provides first responder medical services to airport users as well as the airport community, hazardous material response, initial response to structural buildings, fire prevention and inspection programs and offers fire and safety training programs.

Winnipeg Airports Authority maintains a staff of 16 professional firefighters and operates 24 hours a day year round and trained to the standards of the Canadian Aviation Regulations and the National Fire Protection Association. Staff are members of the South Interlake Mutual Aid District and work closely with The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service and 17 Wing Winnipeg Fire Department.

Winnipeg Airports Authority Firefighters are holding a contest for a chance to be Airport Fire Captain for the Day!

The Airport Fire Captain for the Day prize includes a day at the Airport Fire Hall with fire safety instruction and education, pizza lunch, overview of airport firefighting and a gift basket with fire safety equipment.
