Thompson's New State-Of-The-Art Cold Weather Testing Facility
November 17, 2010

Though this announcement took place a few weeks ago – apologies for the late posting – it is nonetheless an important one for the aviation industry in Manitoba.
The grand opening of the Global Aerospace Centre for Icing and Environmental Research (GLACIER) facility and the not-for-profit Environmental Test, Research and Education Center (EnviroTREC) took place at the facility’s location just south of Thompson, Manitoba.
GLACIER is a state-of-the-art jet testing facility – specializing in engine icing – and is being recognized as one of the most advanced such facility in the world. It has two different sites; one where the actual testing takes place, and another where offices and control rooms are located.
Rolls-Royce’s new Trent XWB engine will be tested at the facility, while Pratt & Whitney will test their new Geared Turbofan – PurePower engine.
For more information on the facility and the players involved in its development, you can read the press release and backgrounder here. Photos of the grand opening – and the facility – can be viewed at the Thompson Citizen online here.
