Electric Bus Charging Station Unveiled
November 27, 2014
Winnipeg Airports Authority and other community partners helped launch Winnipeg Transit’s new daily service to and from the airport on its new battery-electric transit buses and unveiled a charging station located at the airport.
Winnipeg Richardson International Airport is the first airport in North America to provide an environmentally friendly transit bus rapid charging station on-site. Construction of the high power charging station was completed in October.
The electric buses will be in daily operation on a 40 kilometer, two-hour route starting at the airport, making its way through Winnipeg’s city center to East Kildonan and back again.
Once at the airport, the bus drives up to the charging station and a roof-mounted pantograph connects seamlessly with the overhead charger interface. It takes approximately 10 minutes to fully charge the battery, allowing the bus to complete its two-hour route.
We were absolutely thrilled to be part of this wonderful green initiative. To work with our community partners to lead transportation innovation, and to do so in a sustainable manner, is one of our core principals. We look forward to seeing more green buses connecting passengers and guests to and from the airport.
