2015 Queen Elizabeth II Aviation Scholarship

Congratulations to former Silverwing youth ambassador Liam Hay on being awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Aviation Scholarship! Liam, pictured above with Catherine Kloepfer, Winnipeg Airports Authority's Senior Vice President, Corporate Services and Chief Financial Officer, received the award at his graduation ceremony earlier today.

A graduate of Collège Sturgeon Heights Collegiate, Liam started out as a Silverwing in 2014 and returned in 2015 as a Lead Silverwing, assisting new students in the program. Through 2014-2015, he volunteered an impressive 138 service hours.

Liam is an aviation enthusiast who hopes to one day become either an air traffic controller or a commercial pilot, Liam will use the scholarship to pursue his post-secondary education. He is registered to attend Confederation College in Thunder Bay, Ontario, in the aviation program.

The scholarship was initiated in recognition of the 2010 Royal Tour by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and his Royal Highness, the Duke of Edinburgh.

Every year, Winnipeg Airports Authority awards this prestigious scholarship to support a student in the Silverwing Youth Volunteer Program who demonstrated leadership, excellent customer service, and is pursuing a post-secondary education in the fields of Aviation, Aerospace, and Tourism.

The Silverwing program was founded in 2006. It gives high school students an opportunity to learn about careers in the field of aviation and become familiar with the operation of the airport. Silverwings enhance the passenger experience by providing personal assistance to travellers and act as ambassadors for our community.

Winnipeg Airports Authority is proud to partner with local schools that offer aviation-related programs and training to our youth.
