Fighting Hunger & Feeding Hope

When thinking of an airport, many words come to mind such as vacations, airplanes, fun, and so on. However, there’s one word most people wouldn’t typically associate with an airport: garden.

In fact, for two decades Winnipeg Airports Authority has maintained a garden on the airport campus and donated all the vegetables to Winnipeg Harvest through their Grow-A-Row program. Fourteen local organizations participated in the program this year.

Every spring, employees roll up their sleeves and plant row upon row of seeds in our garden. Throughout the summer, departments take turns tending to it. This culminates in a harvest day where we load up all the fresh produce and deliver it to Winnipeg Harvest, who then distributes it to local families in need.

This year, we loaded up three pickup trucks full of vegetables and dropped off the produce at Winnipeg Harvest’s warehouse. In total, we donated 3,769 lbs of vegetables in 2015.

This summer marked our 20th year participating in Winnipeg Harvest’s Grow-A-Row program. Over the years, Winnipeg Airports Authority has donated over 42,000 lbs of fresh produce from our airport garden to help ‘fight hunger and feed hope.’
