Drone safety

Drones, or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), are changing the aviation landscape. If you're a drone operator, be aware of your responsibilities.

Fly your drone safely and legally

Refer to Transport Canada for information on drone safety, services, and information.

Avoid flying a drone near YWG

  • Never fly closer than 9 km to any airport, heliport, or aerodrome. Here's the radius for Winnipeg Richardson International Airport.
  • Don't fly within restricted and controlled airspace, including near or over Winnipeg Richardson International Airport, military bases, prisons, and forest fires.
  • Don't fly drones near moving vehicles, busy streets, or anywhere you could endanger or distract drivers.
  • Avoid flying a drone anywhere that may interfere with first responders.

Know your drone operation category

Different rules apply for basic, advanced, or special drone operations. Determine your category of drone operation to know if you need a Special Flight Operations Certificate.

Travelling with your drone

If you're planning to travel with your drone, check with your airline to confirm if they'll accept it as a checked or carry-on item. Identify the type of battery in your drone and review CATSA guidelines for batteries.
