Summer is made for travel. In fact, it’s our community’s favourite season to hop aboard a plane and go on an adventure, discover new places, or visit the people and places they love.

Winnipeg Richardson International Airport typically sees more passengers travel through the terminal during July and August than any other time of the year. With many people planning to pack their bags this summer for the first time since the start of the pandemic, we’re encouraging travellers to prepare before arriving at YWG. Here are a few things to keep in mind to help make your summer travel plans go smoothly:

Don’t forget your mask

You must wear a mask while going through pre-board security screening checkpoints at YWG and while flying, as mandated by Transport Canada. Masks are also mandatory in all areas of the terminal after security checkpoints.

Review requirements for your trip

Make sure to confirm the details of your itinerary in advance, including the travel rules and restrictions for your destination. If you need a COVID-19 test result, CardiAI is operating a testing facility at the airport. Remember to check what steps you must follow to return to Canada if you travel internationally.

Know what you can pack

Learn what you can and can’t pack in your carry-on by visiting CATSA's website. Also, don’t forget to weigh and measure your bags before leaving home to ensure it meets your airline’s luggage policies. By packing right, you’ll shorten your time at check-in counters and pre-board security screening checkpoints and reduce your risk of having to leave items behind.

Plan your parking

Save time and money by pre-booking your airport parking online. CAA members also receive a discount when they enter their valid membership number. Winnipeg Transit, taxi companies, and ridesharing services can also deliver you to the terminal’s front door.

Arrive early

Summer is a busy time at YWG, so you’ll likely encounter higher passenger volumes at peak times. Give yourself plenty of time to get to the airport and your boarding gate. You should arrive at the airport two hours before a domestic flight and three hours before a transborder or international flight.
