Winnipeg Airports Authority Officially Opens Community’s New Front Door

October 30, 2011 - Winnipeg Airports Authority (WAA) officially welcomed travellers through Canada’s newest and greenest airport.

“Consultation has been key throughout this project and today marks a significant milestone for all our stakeholders,” said Barry Rempel, President & CEO of Winnipeg Airports Authority Inc. “We are very pleased to today be delivering exciting new facilities which will meet the needs of our community for decades to come.”

”Congratulations to Winnipeg Airports Authority on the opening of Canada’s newest and greenest airport,” said The Honourable Steven Fletcher, Member of Parliament for Charleswood – St. James – Assiniboia and Minister of State (Transport). “Having such a connection to the global economy and the ability to move people and goods will propel future opportunities within our community.”

Opening day celebrations include a ribbon cutting ceremony, refreshment stations and first flights greeted by Airports Authority representatives. First arriving and departing crews and passengers were provided with memorabilia - Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson hats and toques and commemorative postcards were distributed.

In Manitoba, airport site redevelopment activities provided for 9,405 person years of employment, $399 million in gross domestic product (GDP) $1,038 million in economic output and $317 million in wages. Ongoing operations at Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport generates 9,727 jobs, $827 million in gross domestic product (GDP) $1,892 million in economic output and $493 million in wages.
