Winnipeg Richardson International Airport’s terminal building was celebrated with a Premier’s Award for Design Excellence, further adding to the terminal’s list of accolades. Stantec Architecture Ltd. with Pelli Clarke Pelli received an Award of Merit as part of the Premier’s Awards for Design Excellence which honour the significant contributions made by architects and designers to the social, cultural, artistic and economic development of Manitoba.
“Serving as the front door to our community, the airport terminal is an open, modern and welcoming space that celebrates our prairie landscape,” said Barry Rempel, President and CEO of Winnipeg Airports Authority. “The airport is vital piece of infrastructure enabling the movement of people and goods, and we are pleased to note the recognition of our design partners in a facility which highlights so many positive things about our community.”
Since opening its doors on October 30, 2011, Winnipeg Richardson International Airport has received numerous awards and accolades. The Travel Channel considered it one of the ‘World's Most Iconic Airports’, CBC News named it as ‘One of the Top 10 Airports in the World’, and London's The Daily Telegraph called it one of ‘The World's Most Stylish Airports.’
In addition to its sleek style, the terminal was designed with the environment in mind. The airport received an Airports Going Green Award in 2011 from the Chicago Department of Aviation for its industry-leading approach to sustainable design. In 2015, the airport achieved LEED Silver certification, making it the first airport terminal in Canada to become LEED certified.
The airport’s design also takes into account the varying physical abilities of visitors and staff. In 2012, the airport received a City of Winnipeg Accessibility Award for its thoughtful layout and inclusive design elements.
