Winnipeg Airports Authority recognized for Airport Carbon Accreditation

Winnipeg Richardson International Airport was recognized this morning in Montreal for distinguished achievement in environmental accountability. Winnipeg Richardson International Airport is one of only 6 airports in Canada, and one of 20 in North America, certified under the Airport Carbon Accreditation program.

Today’s recognition under the Program’s Level One Mapping complements other WAA achievements in sustainability, which include becoming the first airport in Canada to be Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified and becoming the first airport (and second corporation in Canada) awarded a Fair Trade Workplace Designation by Fairtrade Canada.

“Winnipeg Airports Authority is proud to be acknowledged as an environmental leader in our sector. Today’s recognition will reinvigorate our efforts to achieve our long-term goal of decreasing our carbon footprint by becoming a carbon neutral facility,” said Barry Rempel, President and CEO of Winnipeg Airports Authority. “We are committed to leading transportation innovation and growth in a socially responsible manner that serves the environment and community into the future.”

Introduced by Airports Council International, Airport Carbon Accreditation is an institutionally-endorsed, global carbon management certification program for airports. It independently assesses and recognizes the efforts of airports to manage and reduce their carbon emissions through four levels of certification: ‘Mapping’, ‘Reduction’, ‘Optimization’ and ‘Neutrality’.

In order to achieve Level One Mapping certification, WAA completed a greenhouse gas emissions inventory for year 2014 operations. The scope of the inventory included all emission sources where WAA has direct ownership and control, including emissions from fuel, electricity and natural gas consumed in its generators, boilers, chillers, fleet vehicles and buildings.
