WAA and Magnusmode making travel better for people with cognitive special needs

WINNIPEG, Manitoba – July 4, 2018 – Winnipeg Airports Authority, in partnership with Magnusmode, today launched a new initiative to assist travellers with cognitive special needs: Winnipeg Richardson International Airport MagnusCards.

The cards increase accessibility for travellers with cognitive impairments by using digital guides to help people access the airport. Magnus, an interactive character, acts as the guide providing the user with reassurances and reinforcing routine. The card deck uses pictures of the airport along with plain language text to offer step-by-step instructions.

“MagnusCards allow us to transform the traveller experience for people with autism and other cognitive impairments, helping us deliver an exceptional customer experience for everyone at Winnipeg Richardson International Airport,” said Barry Rempel, President and CEO of Winnipeg Airports Authority. “This is another step in our effort to make the airport and travel inclusive for everyone in our community.”

“Airports are busy and complex environments,” said Nadia Hamilton, Founder and President of Magnusmode. “This can be overwhelming for people with cognitive special needs and their families. By making airport activities more predictable and manageable – for example, going through security screening – MagnusCards reduce the stress and anxiety that often accompanies air travel.”

“Navigating the Winnipeg Richardson International Airport just became easier for thousands of Manitobans who have intellectual disabilities,” said Janet Forbes, Executive Director of Inclusion Winnipeg. “MagnusCards create a travel experience that promotes inclusion with the ease and comfort that any traveller expects. Greater independence for people travelling on their own or with others enhances the experience for Manitobans, and visitors to Manitoba, who are coming through our great airport.”

Starting today, Winnipeg Richardson International Airport MagnusCards are available on the MagnusCards app which can be downloaded from the App Store, Google Play or by following the MagnusCards link on WAA.ca. Hard copies of the cards are also available at the Info Booth on the Arrivals Level of the airport.
