More passengers, enhanced retail and new construction propel WAA in Second Quarter of 2018

WINNIPEG, Manitoba – July 24, 2018 – The second quarter of 2018 continued to be strong for Winnipeg Airports Authority (WAA).

Building on a record-setting 2017, passenger totals increased by 2.1 percent compared to the second quarter of the previous year. 1,073,512 passengers travelled through Winnipeg Richardson International Airport during April, May, and June of 2018.

Consolidated revenue was $32.6 million for the second quarter, compared to $31.1 million for the same period in 2017.

“WAA continues to make strategic investments in the airport campus to benefit our community,” said Barry Rempel, President and CEO of Winnipeg Airports Authority. “Whether it is providing our region with more options for travel, new stores in response to customer feedback, or new construction to attract business, we are driven by the desire to serve our stakeholders and to be a source of pride for our city and province.”

The second quarter of 2018 saw WAA break ground on a new Ground Services Equipment (GSE) Building. Once completed, the GSE Building will offer tenants secure access to airside operations at the airport. The relocation of tenants to the new space creates an opportunity to redevelop the east side cargo campus, enabling WAA to attract new companies to the city and current tenants to expand.

Lolë, a Canadian-owned women’s sports apparel outlet opened its doors in May in the terminal. The new store is a welcome addition, providing another option for travellers.

WAA welcomed Swoop Airlines to Winnipeg with its first flight on June 25. Swoop currently offers direct flights from Winnipeg to Hamilton 6 times a week, with service from Winnipeg to Abbotsford starting on August 17.
