Winnipeg Airport to Be First in North America to Pilot Autonomous Snowplow

WINNIPEG, Manitoba – October 3, 2018 – Winnipeg Airports Authority has entered into a partnership with Manitoba companies Northstar Robotics Inc. and Airport Technologies Inc. (ATI) to pilot an autonomous snowplow at Winnipeg Richardson International Airport this winter.

The partnership will convert an ATI Snow Mauler to be operated autonomously. The plow is expected to be ready for demonstration and testing in early 2019. Once operational, the plow will be trialed in low-risk areas of the airport away from active aircraft. As with all operations at the airport, the use of the plow will be consistent with the airport's Safety Management System which is regulated by Transport Canada.

“Our commitment is to lead transportation innovation and growth for the benefit of our community,” said Barry Rempel, President and CEO of Winnipeg Airports Authority. “This partnership is a great example of bringing the incredible talent in our province together to find new and better ways to tackle challenges.”

“We have seen autonomous technology tested and adopted in any number of sectors,” said Shawn Schaerer, President and Founder of Northstar Robotics. “We are excited to work with Winnipeg Airports Authority and Airport Technologies to be the first in North America to apply this technology to airport snow clearing.”

“The team at ATI is proud to have our equipment as part of this project,” added ATI’s President, Brendon Smith. “ATI has a long-standing relationship with Winnipeg Airports Authority, and we are excited to partner with them and Northstar Robotics on the next generation of airport snow clearing.”
