From the moment you arrive at YWG, the airport experience will feel different with new protocols and practices in place to promote the safety of all. This guide helps you know what to expect each step of the way to feel prepared and confident the next time you move through Winnipeg Richardson International Airport.
We take our role of connecting the community seriously and your safety is our top priority. In this new reality amid COVID-19, it is important to us that all travellers, visitors and staff feel safe and confident at YWG knowing all actions are being taken to exceed health standards and deliver a safe and clean airport environment.
Your safe travel to and from the airport is important to us and we have plenty of options available, including: taxis, public transit, sedan or limo service and ridesharing. All transportation providers at YWG are following the advice of the Vehicles for Hire guidelines outlined by the Province of Manitoba to protect all drivers and riders.
You can expect to:
- Load your own personal items into the vehicle, ex. luggage
- Have the windows open
- Be asked to sanitize your hands
- Be limited to one household per vehicle.
These travel options are only available for asymptomatic travellers and all travellers who need to self-isolate should not use public transit.
Key Storage Service is also available at the Information Booth so vehicle keys can be dropped off for travellers to pick up. Of course, our parkade and economy lot are always available. All parking equipment is sanitized as part of the YWG Clean Program and the tap limit has been increased to $250 to minimize contact. You can also book your parking online to scan a barcode for a touch-free experience.
If you do not have access to a private vehicle and are experiencing symptoms, you need to call Health Links –Info Sante to develop a safe travel plan. For more information, please visit Government of Manitoba,Transportation Advice
Atmosphere and Services
Upon arrival, all travellers, visitors and staff must practice physical distancing and wear a face covering or non-medical mask in all public areas of the airport terminal. As of July 29, the new face covering requirement came into effect to ensure everyone feels safe and protected at YWG. Please bring your own face covering or non-medical mask to the airport. Non-medical masks are available for purchase only after security at Prairie News or CNBC News as retail concessions pre-security remain temporarily closed. Please review all signage on your path and listen for audio announcements in the terminal.
You may notice cleaning staff in high traffic areas working to disinfect all touch point surfaces. Our cleaning routines, solutions and standards have been heightened to exceed all health protocols in collaboration with public health authorities. For more details, visit our YWG Clean Program.
Unfortunately, many airport offerings are temporarily unavailable. Some vendors are closed while others are operating with reduced hours as they work to deliver safe customer interactions. Before you travel, please visit our Shopping, Dining and Services for hours of operation. For assistance at the airport, please visit our Information Booth on the Arrivals Level.
We recommend you arrive early for your flight as new safety protocols may take longer to carry out. To check in, you can use a self-serve kiosk or head to the airline check-in counter. All kiosks are disinfected in-between flights and every other kiosk is powered down to allot a safe distance from others. At the airline check-in counters, physical distancing decals are located on the floor to mark six-foot distances from the next person in line.
Each airline is implementing its own safety measures at check-in. You can use an e-boarding pass on your personal device to go paperless. If you need to check a bag, please drop your bag(s) on the conveyor belt behind the airline counters or you may be directed to the Oversize Baggage Area to drop your bags during off-peak hours. Hand sanitizer stations are located near the check-in area for your convenience.
It is important to ensure you are wearing your face covering properly at all times in the airport to cover your nose and mouth, especially when going through security as you may be in close proximity to security personnel. Physical distancing decals are located on the floor to promote safe distances in line and hand sanitizer stations can be found before and after security for encouraged traveller use.
You will be asked to scan your own boarding pass and hold onto all of your own documentation to minimize touch encounters (assistance available if needed). The screening process is being carried out with increased cleaning practices and security personnel will be wearing personal protective equipment as required to ensure safety.
At The Gate
At the gate, you will see physical distancing signage on the seats as a friendly reminder to sit a couple chairs away from others. While waiting to board, it is important to practice physically distancing in line. If you need to use the facilities at any time, all washrooms at YWG are cleaned on an hourly basis, including the water bottle refill stations, complete with touch-free soap dispensers, sinks and hand dryers. Individual sanitizers are also available in each stall.
During the boarding process, airlines are carrying out health checks, which may include temperature checks, to ensure all travellers are deemed safe to fly. You may be asked by an airline representative to remove your face covering or non-medical mask for identification purposes.
Amid COVID-19, all airlines have increased their cleaning practices to meet public health standards. Please see the response strategy and enhanced safety protocols for each airline servicing YWG below:

It is important to know whether you need to self-isolate based on current travel protocols.Signage is updated frequently inside the terminal to ensure travellers have the latest information.
International travellers must undergo a screening by a border services agent or Quarantine officer to assess for symptoms upon entering the country. You need to confirm your self-isolation plans for the next 14 days in accordance with the Quarantine Act. Domestic travellers arriving from Western Canadian jurisdictions or east of Terrace Bay, Ontario who are asymptomatic are not required to self-isolate. All other domestic travellers are required to self-isolate for 14 days. Visit the Government of Manitoba Phase Three update to learn more.
Please wait until your items have arrived to approach the baggage carousel. To minimize crowds, we ask you meet your loved ones/greeters outside the airport, such as in a vehicle or on the curb. If you require assistance, someone can meet you inside to provide support. Visitors are not to remain parked on the curb to ensure curbside pick-up is accessible for all. Please consider calling your ride when you are ready to leave YWG. Hand sanitizer stations are also available in the Arrivals Hall to use before you go on your way!
